Never Sleep Again Original Cast

In 1991, four actors and a twenty-piece company recorded the highlights from a horror rock musical that was weeks away from becoming either a franchise sensation or a very expensive misunderstanding.

The misunderstanding won.

When the production's underlying screen rights collapsed, the dream killer was hastily renamed Frankie Krail. Nothing else of consequence was altered. Rafe Mordant kept the full burn makeup, battered hat, striped sweater and bladed glove; Lena Ward remained sleepless heroine Sadie Vale; Jamie Pike played her increasingly caffeinated boyfriend Kit; and Mara Quill carried the adults' secret as Sadie's mother, Marla. The attempted legal disguise convinced nobody and photography ended after nine days.

The cast's stereo highlights survived with composer and musical director Vera Gloam, whose songs treat adolescent terror, parental guilt and workplace grievance with equal melodic seriousness. Mordant's Frankie does not tell jokes so much as issue punchlines as terms of employment. Ward gives the score its stubborn conscience, Pike its emergency charm and Quill its cost.

First issued by Internegative Editions in 2026, Never Sleep Again is the company's only recording: eight numbers from a show that changed one name and expected the lawyers not to notice the glove.
