These five came out of one winter of leaving before the kettle boiled.
I wrote them close — a foot from the microphone, the same distance I write everything from and no further. They're about wanting someone and not letting it turn into anything, which is a thing I know how to do better than almost anything else, and I'm not sure that's something to be proud of. I left the breaths in. I left the room in. Where the voice cracks, it cracks.
People will ask which of these happened. That's the one thing I'll keep.
