Bite the Cake

The cake was meant for a photograph.

Four names had been printed on the running order, but by the time the room filled up, one had become a headline and three had become a plus sign. SOCKERBETT played the set anyway. They smiled where the light was clean. They let the count slip where the floor needed to move. Then they carried the untouched cake through the loading door and ate it with the little forks nobody had remembered to put out.

Bite the Cake takes place inside that night. “CAKE KNIFE” draws the first line. “FOUR NAMES” corrects the laminate. “PRETTY UGLY” ruins the approved photograph; “SEVEN EIGHT NINE” makes the missing beat impossible not to feel. By “HOLD MY HAIR,” the performance is over and care has become the only useful glamour left. “CRUMBS AT DAWN” is not a victory lap. It is four people deciding that ambition still belongs to them, provided it keeps every name intact.

The record is bright because SOCKERBETT love pop. It is crooked because they play together. It is nasty only in the way a precise answer can feel nasty to someone who expected decoration.
